The Key to a better health club

Based in the heart of Keyworth village in Nottingham, The Key Health Club is a small and friendly privately-owned health and fitness club. Under new ownership from July 2017, it has undergone some major changes and the extensive refurbishment programme across the whole of the club is now complete.

The facility was formerly known as Key VI Fitness, until partners, Phil and Elizabeth Gabriel, bought the business from its previous owners and set about transforming the facility to introduce a new lease of life to the club and attract new members.

Phil and Elizabeth have extensive backgrounds in the leisure industry, having worked as partners in the Nottinghamshire Swim School LLP, running ‘Puddle Ducks’ baby and pre-school, children’s and pre-natal swim classes. The duo now sub-hire the pool facilities to Puddle Ducks so swimming lessons will continue to be hosted from the new health club.

The whole facility has undergone a significant makeover during the transition, including refurbished changing rooms, new flooring, improved air-handling and a new reception and café area with a revised and much-improved menu offering. The building has been refreshed and decorated throughout, creating a light and spacious aesthetic.

With the help of Johnson Reed’s fitness equipment lease facilities, Phil and Elizabeth have replaced all of the gym’s ageing equipment for more contemporary models. Alongside the new range of cardio and strength-training equipment, The Key Health Club now boasts a new functional fitness training area, and as a result of the improved facilities, they have been able to increase the number of fitness classes available to members.

Phil and Elizabeth worked closely with Mark at Johnson Reed to secure the necessary funding and turn the agreement around within the project deadlines. The lease breaks the overall cost down over fixed, regular repayments – and with the goal to grow the club’s existing membership by 150% – The Key Health Club can expect to break-even on their investment much sooner than if they had purchased the equipment outright. In addition, every lease payment is allowable as a tax-deductible expense, allowing further savings throughout the term.

Phil commented, “Working with Johnson Reed was easy, quick and simple. They reviewed our requirements and soon provided a couple of competitive quotes for us to consider. Within a week, we had agreements signed and the gym equipment was on its way. As a new business owner, it was great to ‘tick off’ one of the important jobs on our very long to do list so early on!”
