Earth Day tends to bring a lot of big conversations, but for most businesses it comes down to something more practical. How you operate day to day, and the choices you make along the way.
This year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” is a reminder that those smaller decisions do actually matter.
At Johnson Reed, we spend our time helping businesses grow, but we also think about how we’re running ours.
How we approach it
We’re not trying to make big claims or overcomplicate things. For us, it’s about getting the basics right and being consistent.
- We plant a tree for every deal we complete through our partnership with Ecologi
- Our office runs with support from solar panels
- Most of the team drive electric company cars, with charging on site
- We use LED lighting across the office to keep energy use down
- We keep things digital where we can to cut down on paper and waste
These are all straightforward changes, but they’re part of a bigger effort to run the business in a more considered way.
Why it matters to us
We believe good business should also be responsible.
Every deal we complete is progress for a customer, but it’s also a chance to do something positive alongside it. We plant one tree per deal through Ecologi, supporting projects like forest garden planting in Busoga, Uganda.
It’s not just about planting trees for the sake of it. These projects help restore land, support local communities, and create a more sustainable way of farming.
It also keeps us honest. If we’re helping other businesses move forward, we should be looking at how we operate too.
Where finance fits in
A lot of businesses want to make more efficient or sustainable choices, but the upfront cost can get in the way.
That’s where finance comes in. Spreading the cost makes it easier to invest sooner rather than putting things off.
In many cases, newer equipment isn’t just better environmentally, it’s more efficient and cost-effective day to day.
Final thought
There’s no single fix when it comes to sustainability. For us, it’s about making sensible changes where we can and building that into how we operate over time. Earth Day is just a good point to stop and take stock.
